The Depressive Curse (inc: amori damnum) is a curse that can inflict severe psychological pain. Since November 2021, it is an unforgivable curse.
Although the curse cannot be reversed, there are preventative measures one can take. For instance, one may dodge the black bolt, block it with a physical barrier, any living thing not a human or goblin, a magical creature, use of the Killing Curse to trigger Priori Incatatem. The Depressive Curse, just like the Killing Curse is considered 'unblockable', thus shield charms won't defend against it. If it hits something non-human, then a black cloud similar to which when a horcrux is destroyed will emit (when destroyed via the Sword of Gryffindor or the Basalisk Fang). If left untreated, the victim will relive any traumatic events he or she has experienced during his/her lifetime.
Like the other unforgivable curses, there is no counter curse, but unlike others, it can be treated surgically if caught early, as the decay from the curse spreads to every part of the victim's body internally, making it impossible to remove.
Survivability[]
Chances of survival of the depressive curse is very slim. Unlike the Killing Curse, the Depressive Curse (is still fatal) is a slow and very depressing way to die if the effects are not treated at all or correctly.

Failed casts[]
Intended victim(s) | Caster(s) | Dates | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Group of Slow Dancing Couples | Alecto Dolohov | 15 June 2017 | Attempted curse, but the Enchanted Wall in the Hall of Hexes deflects the curse, deflecting off of Voldemort, and caused several death eaters to be flown off backwards, similar to the effects of a very powerful stunning spell, cursing Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange, Amycus and Alecto Carrow and Augustus Rockwood. |
unnamed | Bellatrix Lestrange | 20 August 2018 | In a duel, Bellatrix attempted to curse him, but Christopher stopped the curse by using the Disarming Charm and the Nuclear Radiation Curse |
Alison Black | Lilly Black (Manipulated by Cruciatus, deliberately) | 6 November 2018 | Attempted curse whilst under the Imperius of Bartemius Crouch Jr., but completely got interrupted when Alastor Moody went in and disarmed her. |
unnamed | Unknown Death Eater | 18 August 2019 | Attempted to curse after finding out about his target's plan to rebind his soul to Christ. The curse has been deflected, nearly hitting him due to a short seal of protection (only lasting a week of such) being active at the time, presumably placed by Dumbledore. |
Etymology[]
The incantation, amouri damnum, is Latin for Love Loss, but damnum, closely related to damnare, which means damn. However, it's actual meaning is: let the heart be shattered. Either way, it either means love to be loss or love to be damned.
Trivia[]
- In the Fifteen Reasons Why MMO/RPG, if you are hit by the curse, your max hp is set to 1% for 60 seconds while the curse is in it's preparation. During those 60 seconds, you are in combat. Teleport scrolls will not work, and logging out (by force-quitting, or by entering character selector menu) will kill you, but the curse will remain either way. The same goes for the Cruciatus, except your max hp is set to 25% and the Combat will end after only 10 seconds as opposed to 60 seconds. This makes (theoretically the) fourth curse extremely deadly if you are caught with it, since you are basically put down to a one hit kill entity, by any mob or player. Even a simple breakup when under the influence can kill you instantly.
